He was an anaesthetist at the Melbourne Hospital 1895-1924 and lectured at the University of Melbourne c.1900-1919. His research centred on the problems connectedwith the administration of anaesthesia, particularly by chloroform and ether, and favoured open-mask administration of anaesthesia.
