He was also a noted entomologist who specialised in the study and distribution of Australian insects capable of spreading disease (especially fleas, ticks, biting flies and mosquitoes). Ferguson published many scientific articles on subjects such as diphtheria, dengue fever and medical entomology and parasitology.
