He wrote several important articles and books including, Catalogue of the land snails of Victoria (1930), Victorian sea shells (1936), The freshwater Mollusca of Victoria (1939) and Marine molluscs of Victoria (1962, co-authored with J.M. Macpherson). These and many of his other works are still used today. Together with John Gatliff, Gabriel wrote at least twenty-seven publications and named forty-five new taxa. Charles Gabriel was appointed the National Museum of Victoria's honorary curator of shells and in 1958 was awarded the Australian Natural History medallion for his contributions to Australian malacology (study of molluscs). Gabriel's library and collections was bequeathed to National Museum of Victoria.
