<biogHist>
Jack Clendinnen was a pioneer in Australia of the interstitial use of radium needles in the treatment of malignant tumours. He was the son of pioneering radiologist Frederick Clendinnen and, having completed his medical studies in 1911, joined his father's practice. It was here that Jack served his apprenticeship in radiology. He took over the practice in 1913, when Frederick died. Rejected for overseas military service in WWI because he was then one of only three radiologists in Victoria, in 1914 he followed Frederick as honorary skiagraphist at the Melbourne Hospital while at the same time shouldering an increased workload at the Caulfield military hospital. In 1929 he became the Melbourne Hospital's first radiotherapist, followed by a 20-year term as radiotherapist at Prince Henry's Hospital. A victim himself of the still-unknown hazards of X-rays (he suffered for years with radiation dermatology), Clendinnen was for 22 years a council member of the Medical Defence Association of Victoria. He also served as a Trustee of the Wilsons Promontory National Park and the Sir Colin Mackenzie Sanctuary at Healesville
