He is generally acknowledged to be the first medical man in Melbourne to take an X-ray photograph of a patient. Clendinnen also invented several devices to assist his medical practice, including an instrument for discovering stone in the bladder by sound, a chloroform inhaler, and an electric coin catcher for removing coins and buttons from the oesophagus. He also invented an automatic telephone, which was adopted by the Victorian Government.

Educated University of Melbourne, Edinburgh (L and LMid, RCP and RCS 1884) and Brussels (MD and doctorate of midwifery 1885).
