<biogHist>
<abstract>Charles David was the city surveyor for Launceston, Tasmania for many years from 1892. He oversaw the construction of many public works including a municipal electricity generator which was Australia's first hydro-electric system, a tramcar service, the East Launceston sewerage system, the Alexandra Suspension Bridge and Carr Villa cemetery. David also consulted the Tasmanian Agricultural &amp; Pastoral Society on the construction of Elphin Showground and the Tasmanian Turf Club on alterations to Mowbray Racecourse and was the Northern Tasmanian Fisheries Association's honorary consulting engineer. Charles David was a Fellow of the Queensland Institute of Architects and committee member of the Launceston Mechanics' Institute and Public Library and of the Launceston Technical School.</abstract>
