After transferring to the Department of Lands and Surveys, he presided over the Murchison-Eucla leg of the rabbit proof fence, the drainage of the Harvey and Stirling estates and an exploration into new areas of the Kimberly (north of latitude 17°). This survey led to the discovery and/or naming of many land marks including the Calder and King Edward rivers. It also gave rise to a large collection of specimens (biological and geological) and Aboriginal artefacts, which were given to the Western Australian Museum.
