<abstract>Edward Brennan was director of public health for the Territory of New Guinea 1928-1941 and chief medical officer for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in the south-west Pacific 1945-1950.</abstract>
<p>Born Stawell, Victoria, 13 April 1887. Died Cronulla, Sydney, 18 August 1953. Military Cross 1915, Distinguished Service Order 1918. Educated University of Melbourne (MB, BS 1909). Resident surgeon, Ballarat Hospital 1909-10; medical superintendent, Fremantle Hospital 1911-14. Officer, Australian Army Medical Corps 1914-20; surgeon lieutenant, Royal Australian Navy 1920-23; travelling medical officer for the Territory of New Guinea 1923-28; director of public health for the territory 1928-41 and member of the Legislative Council 1933-41; lecturer, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine; assistant director of medical services for New Guinea 1941-42; deputy director of medical services, Allied Works Council, New South Wales 1942-45; chief medical officer, United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in the south-west Pacific 1945-50; Repatriation Department, Sydney.</p>
