Working for the South Australian he developed ways to control the spread of the disease by improving milk supply standards along with implementing early diagnosis techniques and notification. Wunderly was instrumental in the development of new X-ray machines capable of screening people on mass. In 1947 he became the first director of tuberculosis in the Commonwealth Department of Health in Canberra. As part of this role Wunderly saw a new national tuberculosis control program introduced as well as free medical, hospital and follow-up care for those with active tuberculosis.
