Joseph Wood was a plant physiologist who made significant contributions to the study of the biochemistry of native plants under water stress, particularly the effects of aridity and mineral nutrition. He was Professor of Botany at the University of Adelaide from 1935 to 1959. Wood was active in professional organisations, serving as President of the Royal Society of South Australia. The J. G. Wood Lecture has been presented biennially since 1962 to the Australian Society of Plant Physiologists, of which Wood was foundation President.
