Her early interest statistical genetics developed further into biostatistics, population health and bioinformatics. She also worked on establishing rigorous statistical techniques for analysing and interpreting the large-scale genomic data that underpins much current biological research. Wilson was for many years at the Australian National University, being Professor of Statistical Science from 1994 to 2008. She was co-founder and Director of the Centre for Bioinformatic Science, a joint research centre between School of Mathematical Sciences and John Curtin School of Medical Research.
