He was a member of many state or national scientific committees and held executive positions on numerous national and international professional societies. White produced over 120 peer reviewed publications.

After graduating in medicine from the University of Sydney, David Ogilvie White went on to do his PhD on influenza viruses. This was the start of his long research career in that area. In 1958 White was appointed lecturer in microbiology at The University of Melbourne to introduce the filed of virology to the department. He quickly rose through the ranks of the University and was eventually appointed Emeritus Professor in 1994. Throughout his 40 years at the University, White saw the expansion of the Microbiology Department and the Faculty of Medicine and trained many under- and postgraduate students. He also took on numerous committee and council roles within the University.

David White had established a good international reputation and was offered fellowships from many international organizations such as the US National Academy of Science. He was also the recipient of many awards and honourable appointments including an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), Honorary Life Member of the Australian Society for Microbiology, Honorary Life Member of the Australian Society of Immunology, the Ivanowsky Medal from the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal and an honourary Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Melbourne.
