He is known for the Ward-Takahashi identity (also known as the Ward Identity). With Abdus Salam he wrote on the standard model of gauge particle interactions. He was an early advocate of the use of Feynman diagrams. Ward published only about 20 papers, but his work was highly influential in that of other researchers and earned for Ward several highly regarded awards. For 20 years Ward worked at a number of universities, including Adelaide, Florida, the Institute of Advanced Studies at Princeton, and Johns Hopkins, as well as the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in the United Kingdom.
