<abstract>Robert Walsh was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales 1973-1982 and Visiting Professor of Human Genetics from 1962 and Professor 1967-1982. Earlier he was founder and Director of the New South Wales Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service from 1946.</abstract>
<p>Born Brisbane, 3 January 1917. Died Sydney, 20 July 1983. OBE 1970, AO 1976, AC 1982. Educated Universities of Queensland (1 year) and Sydney (medicine). Junior Resident Medical Officer, Sydney Hospital 1940, Senior Resident Medical Officer 1941; medical officer, Red Cross Society 1941; officer commanding New South Wales Blood Transfusion Service 1941-46, first Director, New South Wales Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service 1946-66; Professor of Human Genetics and Head of the School of Human Genetics, Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales 1967-73, Dean, Faculty of Medicine 1973-82 and acting head, School of Community Medicine (which absorbed the School of Human Genetics) 1973-76. Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1959; James Cook Medal, Royal Society of New South Wales 1980. Chairman (Biological Sciences), Australian Academy of Science 1966-70; chairman, Australian HA [Human Adaptability] Committee, International Biological Programme; chairman, Commonwealth-Queensland Committee of Inquiry into the Crown-of-thorns Starfish 1970-71; president, Australian Academy of Forensic Sciences; president, Sydney Hospitallers Association; president, Cystic Fibrosis Association of New South Wales; chairman, Australian Ionising Radiation Advisory Council 1973; Honorary life member of the Red Cross Society, the Australian Blood Transfusion Society, the Haematology Society of Australia, the German Haematology Society, the German Society for Blood Transfusion and the Australian Society of Anaesthetists.</p>
