Stan Verco was a pioneer radiologist in South Australia. He established his own radiology practice in 1921: later partners in the practice included Colin Gurner and their sons, Peter Verco and Colin M. Gurner. Verco was associated in an honorary capacity with the Adelaide Children's and (Royal) Adelaide Hospitals for long periods. He was instrumental in the introduction of mass chest X-rays as a public health measure, including the development of the necessary equipment and the use of mobile caravan X-ray units. In addition he played a central role in the establishment in 1944 of a training course at the School of Mines and Technology: graduates received certificates from both the School and the Australian and New Zealand Association of Radiology. Verco was the first President of the College of Radiologists (Australian and New Zealand).
