His research interests included solution thermodynamics and the accurate measurement and interpretation of the equilibrium and transport properties of electrolyte and nonelectrolyte solutions. He made outstanding contributions in the this field. Among his major publications, written with Robert A. Robinson, was Electrolyte solutions (1955, 3rd edition 1970). A collaborator in much of his work his collaborator was his wife, Jean Stokes (née Wilson). In 1980 the Electrochemistry Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute inaugurated the R. H.
