His research was in the area of mammalian evolutionary biology and his work included a description of the multiple sex chromosomes of the Black Tailed Wallaby and the Potoroo. He then went on to describe the phenomenon of dormant blastocysts in the Quokka and to demonstrate that in females kangaroos the paternal X-chromosome is invariably inactivated in somatic tissues.
