He was appointed to a personal chair in 1967 and then Professor of Organic Chemistry in 1971. Ritchie was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA) in 1963. His research was principally on the phytochemistry of the Australian flora, particularly the families Flindersiaceae, Myrtaceae, Proteaceae and Rutaceae.
