He was formerly Director of CSIRO's Institute of Energy and Earth Resources 1984-1987 and Chief of its Division of Mineral Engineering 1982-1984. Reid's major scientific achievements have been in the field on solid-state chemistry and its applications to assist the minerals industry. He was responsible for the development of QEM*SEM for automated characterisation of ores and minerals by scanning electron microscope imaging and X-ray analysis, and has contributed to a variety of fields, including commercial solar energy panels, the detailed understanding of the very-high-pressure minerals likely to exist in the deep mantle of the earth, and a number of industrial minerals processes.
