<biogHist>
<abstract>Bernhard Neumann was Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics, Institute of Advanced Studies, Australian National University, Canberra 1962-1974. He was involved in editing several mathematical journals, including being editor and publisher of the <span style="font-style:italic">IMU Canberra Circular</span> from 1972 to 1996. His first wife was mathematician Hanna Neumann. Neumann was educated at the Universities of Freiburg, Berlin (Dr Phil) and Cambridge (PhD). In 1922 the Australian Mathematics Trust inaugurated the B. H. Neumann Award for Excellence in Mathematics Enrichment.</abstract>
