Sir Jack Murray was Principal of the Queensland Agricultural College from 1923 to 1945 and Administrator of Papua and New Guinea from 1945 to 1952. Under his administration the run down College was transformed into Queensland's top rural education institute. Murray was also heavily involved in the military: between 1913 and 1920 he was a member of the Australian Imperial Force serving in many locations; and from 1935 was administering army training schools and civil affairs.
