<abstract>Alexander Macbeth was Professor of Chemistry, University of Adelaide 1928-1954 and Dean of the Faculty of Science. Earlier he was Senior Lecturer in Chemistry, United College University, St Andrews from 1919 and then Reader in Chemistry, University of Durham 1924-1928. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA) in 1955. He played a key role in establishing pharmaceutical industry in Australia and worked as a consultant for companies including Beckers Pty Ltd, Johnson Chemical Laboratories, and Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand.</abstract>
