He continued as Director of the Centre from 1996, when it was established as an independent Incorporated Entity. Linnane's research included pioneering studies into the biogenesis of mitochondria, and into interferon, gastrointestinal cancer and ageing. He was the first to isolate functional mitochondria from baker's yeast, working on the protein synthesising system which could be inhibited by antibacterial drugs. With colleagues he discovered a series of antibiotic resistance markers which were inherited separately from nuclear genes.
