He arrived at Port Phillip in 1840 and worked on stations at Reedy Creek and Swan Hill until he purchased Nangatta cattle station near Twofold Bay, New South Wales in 1851.

Born Sandgate, Kent, England, 17 April 1828. Died Melbourne, 7 May 1902. Educated Moravian Mission School, Neuwied, Germany and privately. Arrived Australia 1840. Overseer, Reed Lake, Quambatook and Swan Hill stations from 1845; ran sheep and cattle in the north-east of Victoria and on Seven Creeks and Euroa stations and overlanded stock to the Riverina and Melbourne; secretary, zoological gardens (Zoological and Acclimatisation Society), Royal Park, Melbourne 1870-81, director 1882-1902. Usher of the Black Rod, Legislative Council of Victoria 1863-93; Member, ANZAAS from 1888; corresponding member, Zoological Society, London.
