He was also Secretary and later Assistant Director of the Melbourne Zoological Gardens 1896-1903.

Born Royal Park, Melbourne, 30 January 1877. Died Mosman, Sydney, 31 March 1951. Educated Veterinary College, Melbourne. Secretary, Zoological Gardens, Melbourne 1896-1902, Assistant Director on the death of his father, Albert Alexander Cochrane Le Souëf (q.v.) from 1902-03; Director, Zoological Gardens, Moore Park, Sydney 1903-16, and the Taronga Zoological Park, Sydney 1916-39, the planning and development of the grounds of which he supervised, as the first director. Council, Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales for 50 years, President 1943-44. With Harry J. Burrell, wrote The Wild Animals of Australasia (1926). Lectured frequently and travelled widely, collecting animals and establishing contacts. Life member, Royal Australasian Ornithologists' Union 1945.
