His teaching had a profound influence on the discipline with nearly 20 graduates from his School also becoming Professors of Medicine at Australian universities. Lambie's principal research interests related to diabetes: he was the first in Europe to use insulin for the treatment of this disease. His major publication, written with Jean Armytage, was Clinical diagnostic methods, or the examination of patients (1947-1948) and embodied his belief in the need for a complete history and physical examination of the patient. He was a advocate of a liberal education encompassing sciences and the humanities.
