Charles Lambie was the first full-time professor of medicine in Australia, being Bosch Professor at the University of Sydney from 1930 to 1957. His teaching had a profound influence on the discipline with nearly 20 graduates from his School also becoming Professors of Medicine at Australian universities. Lambie's principal research interests related to diabetes: he was the first in Europe to use insulin for the treatment of this disease. His major publication, written with Jean Armytage, was <span style="font-style:italic">Clinical diagnostic methods, or the examination of patients</span> (1947-1948) and embodied his belief in the need for a complete history and physical examination of the patient. He was a advocate of a liberal education encompassing sciences and the humanities. In 1931 he proposed the establishment of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and was a founding Fellow in 1938.
