Gerald Hill was Naturalist to the Commonwealth Government Exploration Party, Central Australia and Northern Territory from 1911 to 1912. His research focused on mosquitoes and this led him to various positions including one at Australian Institute of Tropical Medicine, Townsville (1919-1922). He also became the first entomologist appointed to the CSIR, where he worked from 1928 to 1941. In this period he turned his focus to the study of termites.
