He was formerly Chief Research Scientist, CSIRO Division of Mathematics and Statistics 1975-1983. Heyde was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA) in 1977 and was Vice-President from 1988 to 1989. He also held executive positions with the Statistical Society of An and the Australian Mathematical Society. Heyde made outstanding contributions to probability theory and its applications, his theoretical work focusing on the laws of large numbers, branching processes, martingale theory and estimation theory. Other interests included the history of statistics and probability; with colleague Eugene Seneta he published several books in this field.
