Charles H. French was an entomologist who spent over 40 years with the Victorian Department of Agriculture, initially as an Inspector employed under the <span style="font-style:italic">Vegetation diseases Act</span>, and later as Government Entomologist. In this role he succeeded his father, Charles French. Between 1907 and 1927 Charles H. French published 31 articles in the Department's <span style="font-style:italic">Journal of agriculture</span>. He was a willing collaborator with his father on field trips when they collected insects. In his early career he was Herbarium Assistant at the Botanical Museum of Melbourne, his responsibilities including excursions to collect specimens for the Museum. The National Herbarium of Victoria (successor to the Museum) holds over 1,000 of his specimens. He was particularly interested in orchids, describing many new species for Victoria. French was a Member (later Honorary Member) of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria for over 60 years.
