He was Senior Lecturer in Theoretical Physics at New England 1960-1963 and Research Officer, CSIRO Radiophysics Laboratory 1956-1959. Fletcher's research interests were in the application of physics to many areas and ranged over biological acoustics, musical instruments, environmental science, and materials including semiconductors and solid-state devices. Among his most influential publications were the books The chemical physics of ice (1970, 2nd edition 1990) and The physics of musical instruments (1991, 2nd edition 1998) with T. D.
