Earlier he had lectured in metallurgical chemistry at Glasgow. In Sydney he expanded his department by including physical chemistry in the curriculum, and founded the chair of organic chemistry. While he conducted some research on corrosion and the reaction between iron and sulphuric acid, he spent considerable time encouraging the projects of his colleagues. Fawsitt actively participated in the wider scientific community, serving as President of the Royal Society of New South Wales and the Australian Chemical Institute.
