He was also Chief Scientist at Kraft Foods Ltd in Melbourne (1976-1981), where he began working in 1938 as a graduate research chemist. Farrer's first job was to develop methods for measuring vitamin B1 levels in food and for conserving B1 levels during the heat processing.
