Worcester, graduating in 1897 as the Queen's gold medallist. This was followed by a further apprenticeship in sail. He was 3rd Officer in S.Y. Morning, the relief ship for the British National Antarctic Expedition, making two voyages to Antarctica between 1902 and 1904. Doorly then went to New Zealand. For 20 years he was a ship's captain with the Union Steam Ship Company where his abilities saw him rise to a senior position. During WWI he commanded New Zealand troop transports and Admiralty colliers, surviving when his ship was torpedoed in the English Channel. In 1925 he moved to Victoria, joining the Port Philip Sea Pilot's Service where his duties included escorting troops and merchant convoys through the Rip during WWII. Doorly's account of the British National Antarctic Expedition was published in 1916, while The Songs of the 'Morning' appeared in 1943. Other publications included short stories and articles for newspapers and magazines, and two books on the merchant navy: The handmaiden of the Navy (1919) and In the wake (1937). 1897 1897 Education - Trained for the merchant navy at Thames Nautical Training College, H.M.S.
