He was also active in botanical, palaeontological and meteorological research. Deane made many valuable observations on eucalypts, quoted in Joseph Maiden's Critical revision of the genus Eucalyptus. Deane's botanical papers were published mostly in the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales.

Deane described numerous species of Eucalyptus, often in association with Henry Maiden, and collected type specimens. These include:
