James Cox was one of Sydney's leading medical practitioners. He had an active private practice as a physician and for nearly 50 years was associated with the Sydney Infirmary as a physician, surgeon and reformer of the hospital's management. A pharmacopoeia which he compiled in 1870 initially met with some resistance. Between 1883 and 1901 he lectured in medical principles and practice at the University of Sydney. Cox was also one of the leading naturalists in New South Wales. He was a foundation member of the Entomological Society of New South Wales and later President of its successor, the Linnean Society of New South Wales. In particular he was noted as a conchologist. He discovered many new species. Among his more than 130 publications was the first monograph published in Australia on molluscs, <span style="font-style:italic">A monograph of Australian land shells</span> (1868). While most of his shells was sold in London 1904 - 1905, some of his collection was donated to the Australian Museum.
