Carrick Chambers was noted as an eminent university academic, science administrator and conservationist. He was for 20 years Professor of Botany at the University of Melbourne. During this time the University's School of Botany became one of Australia's largest teaching and research departments in botany. As instigator and Chair (for 16 years) of the Grounds Committee, he oversaw the re-landscaping the entire campus. His own research ranged from plant viruses and palaeobotany to his main focus, the taxonomy of ferns in the family Blechnaceae. Chamber's interests in landscaping and horticulture were reflected in his participation in the creation of the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne; the Gardens Committee at National Trust of Australia (Victoria) property, Rippon Lea; and his chairmanship at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne of the Maud Gibson Trust and the Botanic Gardens Plant Research Trust. In 1986 he became Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney. As Director he oversaw the opening and development of the Gardens' two satellite gardens (at Mount Tomah in the Blue Mountains and the Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan) and the construction of a new Herbarium building.
