In his ten years at the School he proved an inspiring teacher, while at the same time earning a masters degree in forestry from Yale University. For 20 years he was senior Lecturer at the Australian School of Forestry and, after retiring, taught botany at the Australian Capital Territory Technical College. Carter was keenly interested in the education of young people. Many of his students found careers in the Victorian and Commonwealth public service. While he published little, he was influential in the early researches of Herbert Dadswell on the properties and structure of Australian woods.
