Gardener in England; arrived Sydney 1844 in charge of plants for Alexander McLeay's garden; Thomas Shepherd's Darling nursery 1844-48; botanist to Edmund Kennedy's expedition to Cape York 1848; clerk, Department of the Superintendent of Convicts 1848-53; locker, Customs Department 1853-54; visited England 1854-55; locker-in-charge, Lamb's warehouse 1855-66; collector for the Sydney Botanic Gardens 1866-75; reported on twenty forest reserves in northern New South Wales 1872; inspector of forests and forestry ranger, Clarence district 1876. Several plants were named after him.
