Station-hand, outback New South Wales and Queensland; Geological Survey of New South Wales 1879-83; curator, Mining and Geological Museum 1883-92; geological surveyor on the field staff 1892-94; Prospecting Board 1894-1902; assistant government geologist 1902-16; government geologist 1916-19. Clarke Medal 1920. Father of Alan McArthur and Walter Mervyn Carne (qq.v.) The Carne River in Papua is named in his honour.
