He was particularly noted for his pioneering work in stripping reactions, atmospheric tide induced by the absorption of solar radiation in the ozone layer, and energy loss of particles in plasma. In 1959 Butler was appointed Professor of Physics at the University of Sydney, later becoming Director of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission Research Establishment at Lucas Heights, New South Wales. As a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science he served as a Member of Council and on a number of the Academy's committees.
