John Brazier was one of Australia's earliest conchologists, making extensive collections along the New South Wales coast and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as Pacific islands, particularly those to the north of Australia. He was first employed by the Australian Museum in 1880 to assist in cataloging the shell collectors, but was soon appointed Conchologist and given additional responsibilities for the ethnological, historical and numismatic collections. Brazier was retrenched during the 1893 recession. He was a close associate of William Macleay, joining him in the foundation of the Linnean Society of New South Wales, and of George F. Angas. Brazier published over 150 research papers, many published in the <span style="font-style:italic">Proceedings</span> of the Society. Much of his shell collection is in the Australian Museum, deposited by Charles Hadely, his successor at the Museum.
