He was first employed by the Australian Museum in 1880 to assist in cataloging the shell collectors, but was soon appointed Conchologist and given additional responsibilities for the ethnological, historical and numismatic collections. Brazier was retrenched during the 1893 recession. He was a close associate of William Macleay, joining him in the foundation of the Linnean Society of New South Wales, and of George F. Angas. Brazier published over 150 research papers, many published in the Proceedings of the Society.
