He taught in the Department of Metallurgy at the University of Melbourne for ten years before joining the CSIR Section of Tribophysics. He was Chief of the Division of Tribophysics from 1949 to 1969. Boas was active in professional organisations, being a Fellow of both the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Institute of Physics, and President of the Australian Institute of Metals.
