<abstract>Frederic Bird followed his father, Samuel, to the University of Melbourne where he demonstrated in Anatomy 1884-1887 and later lectured in Surgery 1896-1920. He also had a large private surgical practice, with a private hospital equipped with an operating theatre, a pathology laboratory and an X-ray room.</abstract>
<p>Born Richmond, Surrey, England, 27 May 1858. Died Toorak, 29 May 1929. CB 1915. Arrived Victoria 1862. Educated University of Melbourne (MB 1882, ChB 1884, ChM 1886), with experience at the hospitals of King's and University colleges, London (MRCS, England, 1883). Part-time demonstrator of anatomy, University of Melbourne 1884-87; honorary surgeon to out-patients, Melbourne Hospital 1887-91, honorary surgeon to in-patients 1891-1914; lecturer and examiner in surgery, University of Melbourne 1895-1920; surgeon to the Metropolitan Fire brigade for many years; consultant to the Queen Victoria Hospital; army medical service 1914-18; retired from private practice 1923; President, surgery section, Australasian Medical Congress, Adelaide 1904; sometime president, Medical Society of Victoria; first president, Surgical Association of Melbourne 1920.</p>
