<abstract>Samuel Bird established a medical practice in Melbourne in 1862, specializing in lung diseases. He lectured in the Medical Faculty of the University of Melbourne 1869-1887. He was the father of Frederick Dougan Bird.</abstract>
<p>Educated King's College Hospital (LRCP 1851, MRCSE 1854). MD, St Andrews 1859. MD, ad eund, University of Melbourne 1862. Resident physician's assistant, Hospital for Consumption, Brompton 1851; private practice, Richmond, Surrey 1852-54, 1856-60, 1861; divisional surgeon 1854; service at Sebastopol 1855; commanded the medical staff for the Turkish expedition to relieve Kars 1855 and awarded the Imperial Order of Medjidie by the sultan; arrived Melbourne 1862; private practice 1861-1904; physician to the Benevolent Asylum and Immigrants Aid Society; first honorary physician, Alfred Hospital from 1871; lecturer in materia medica, University of Melbourne from 1869, lecturer in the theory and practice of medicine 1881-87; chief medical officer to the Australian Mutual Provident Society in Victoria for 30 years. President, Medical Society of Victoria 1869. Interested in chest disease.</p>
