Together with his brother James, he designed a number of churches, many warehouses and private homes. In 1854 James returned to England so Charles went into business with Thomas Taylor and over the next four years they designed more significant landmark buildings including the Melbourne Church of England Grammar School (now Melbourne Grammar). From 1858 Webb ran a solo practice designing Wesley College, Royal Arcade, the Windsor Hotel and many other significant buildings.
