Carl Nobelius ran the largest nursery south of the equator. He established his <span style="font-style:italic">Gembrook Nurseries</span> in Emerald, Victoria in 1890. Six years later, he had two million stock trees and was importing fruit and trees across Australia and to New Zealand, South Africa, India, Japan, Europe and South America. Nobelius even established a large-scale pear and apple orchard in Tasmania. He was a keen experimenter with horticultural techniques and became a highly skilled propagator.
