<abstract>Carl Leibius arrived in Australia in 1859 and was appointed Assistant Assayer for the Sydney Mint. By 1870 he was the Senior Assayer. His main interests were in the areas of identifying and refining ores including gold. Leibius was involved with the Royal Society of New South Wales for over twenty years, being their President in 1890. He was also a Fellow of the Chemical Society of London.</abstract>
