His public life is largely the history of pharmacy in Victoria in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Apprenticed to a pharmacist in Norfolk; arrived Melbourne 1853; further pharmaceutical and chemical studies, London and Heidelberg, 1868-71; pharmacy, Fitzroy, Melbourne 1871-87; government analytical chemist, Crown Law Department 1887-1902; also acted as analyst to the Customs Department. Founder, Pharmaceutical Society of Australia and president 1878-81; an original member of the Pharmacy Board and president 1883-1902; lectured for some years at the College of Pharmacy in chemistry, materia medica and botany; examiner in chemistry, College of Pharmacy and University of Melbourne; an original member of the Central Board of Health.
