He was elected physician to the Melbourne Hospital in 1854 and soon after appointed to the University of Melbourne Council. He was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1858-1887.

Born Kent, England, 19 January 1817. Died Melbourne, 3 December 1897. CMG 1888, KCMG 1893. Studied medicine by apprenticeship and at St Bartholemew's Hospital (graduated as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and a licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries 1841). MD, St Andrews 1847. Various appointments and private practice in England; arrived Melbourne 1852; physician, Melbourne Benevolent Asylum from 1853; physician, Melbourne Hospital 1854-66, consulting physician from 1866; extensive private practice; University of Melbourne Council 1855-87, chancellor 1887-97. Responsible for the establishment of the University of Melbourne medical school in 1862. Commemorated by the Brownless Medical Library at the university.
