Martin Irving was professor of Greek and Latin Classics with Ancient History (later renamed Classical and Comparative Philology and Logic) at the University of Melbourne from 1855 to 1871, then headmaster at Wesley College. Later he bought and ran Hawthorn Grammar School. While Irving was in charge, student numbers rose dramatically at three education institutes and new subject areas were introduced. In 1872, he was offered to head the Victorian Department of Education and in 1887 became vice-chancellor of the University of Melbourne. Martin Irving was also one of the foundation commissioners of the Public Service Board of Victoria (1884-1893).
