Later he bought and ran Hawthorn Grammar School. While Irving was in charge, student numbers rose dramatically at three education institutes and new subject areas were introduced. In 1872, he was offered to head the Victorian Department of Education and in 1887 became vice-chancellor of the University of Melbourne.
